Reading Rooms Volunteer (Criminal Justice) - Verbal Arts Centre

Beyond the Walls is a project funded by Spirit of 2012, delivering Reading Rooms sessions to young people in the criminal justice system.  Reading Rooms is a shared reading project which was introduced by Verbal Arts Centre in Derry as part of the City of Culture events in 2012 and has been successfully delivered with children, young people in the criminal justice system, adults with learning disabilities and elderly people in care.

Reading Rooms sessions run over 12 weeks and last one hour facilitated by a volunteer.  The volunteer reads one short story and one poem, selected by literary guides and annotated with questions to prompt discussion on the group's thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

Volunteers receive accredited training in facilitation skills for shared reading (OCN Level 2), safeguarding children and adults at risk and ongoing support from staff and peers at regular volunteer events.
