Foyle Volunteer Awards 2007

Volunteers recognised at Gala Event at the Everglades Hotel

Volunteers from the Derry City and Strabane & District council areas joined together in a special night of celebration at the Everglades Hotel on Thursday 6th December 2007. The event was organised by North West Volunteer Centre as part of the International Day of Volunteering celebrations and was a perfect way to recognise and pay tribute to the time, effort and commitment displayed by volunteers throughout the area week in, week out.

A fantastic turnout on the evening together with splendid musical accompaniment provided by Tracy McRory and the Cantamus Choir and a delightful setting ensured that everyone present had a wonderful evening to remember. William Caulfield, recent star in Jack and the Beanstalk at the Millennium Forum, kept the 250 strong crowd entertained and ensured the event was set up to be a relaxed, joyous and celebratory evening. In addition, Seamus Murray, Director of Voluntary and Community Unit, DSD delivered an informative speech, outlining the support government gives to develop volunteering further in Northern Ireland, whilst also highlighting the significance of the contribution of volunteers in our local communities.

In all, Jim Travers, President of Derry Credit Union, main sponsors for the event presented ten award categories, with William Caulfield expertly hosting the ceremony adding a light hearted and debonair touch to proceedings. Whilst the event was an ideal opportunity to recognise local volunteers, it also demonstrated the power of community activity in breaking down barriers, rebuilding lives and tackling serious social issues that often go unnoticed.

Geoff Hunter, Volunteer Co-ordinator commented, ‘The evening has been a resounding success and is a wonderful show case for volunteering throughout the Derry City and Strabane District Council areas. This event demonstrates volunteers’ commitment to tackling grass root problems and specific social needs whilst showing the great diversity of volunteering locally, not only through the many different activities but also through the many different ages and backgrounds represented here tonight’

All the volunteers recognised during the event provide very practical support to their respective communities and were nominated by people who value their commitment and wanted to say a sincere thank you and well done for their achievements.
