About Us

Our Main aims are to promote volunteering in the local community; to recruit, match and place volunteers in a wide range of host organisations; and to support volunteers through advice, training and expenses.

We were awarded the Investors in People award in August following our IIP assessment visit on 1st July 2010.  After a great deal of planning and preparation we were delighted to receive confirmation in August that we had been successful and would be awarded the IIP standard. Whilst we recognise the fantastic achievement, we are determined to ensure that the IIP award is the first step in showcasing our commitment to providing excellent volunteering services in the Derry City and Strabane District Council areas. We are also dedicated to supporting vulnerable people to help them to fulfil their hopes and aspirations through volunteering and we will continue to develop activities, training programmes and other services to enhance the volunteering experience.

The Benefits of Volunteering...

Volunteering is not all give, give, give... As a volunteer you have your own reasons for getting involved, be it to meet new friends, learn something new, give something back, campaign for something you believe in, to get a job, or to try something different. With information and links to all sorts of volunteering opportunities your local volunteer centre can help you find something to suit your needs.
Anyone can volunteer and all types of people are getting involved; young people, older and retired people, men and women, people from diverse ethnic backgrounds, people with children and other caring responsibilites, people in employment and people who are unemployed, the list is endless. (NB if you are on benefits you can still volunteer, just ask us about this). Go on, give it a go!!!

The North West Volunteer Centre are an umbrella body for ACCESS NI and can support groups with the process of vetting volunteers and people in paid positions. Access NI was established by a joint programme between the Northern Ireland Office, the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety, the Department of Education and the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

For disclosure application forms please contact ACCESS NI or alternatively contact the NWVC for further help & support. Click here for our user agreements and here for our notes and guidance.
